WCA Jays Wrap Up Home Season At Elks Stadium

After hosting an exciting and hard fought BC Junior Baseball Championship last weekend the WCA Jays host the Vernon Diamondbacks Wednesday night at 7:30pm in the final OMBL game of the season.

The WCA Jays then play host to the 2012 Okanagan Major Baseball League Playoffs which determine who attends the 2012 BC Senior Championships in Prince George over the August long weekend. The combatants are the Kamloops Sun Devils, Vernon Diamondbacks and WCA Kelowna Jays.

The Jays won the Bruce Mckenzie Trophy in 2009 and 2010 and Kamloops won it in 2011 in an exciting extra inning game. The 2012 version of the Kamloops Sun Devils are a very solid team and will be tough to beat.

The Jays are missing injured star center fielder Ray Guyton and starting catcher Stefan Mckee, both on the D/L, and this leaves some big shoes to fill by some of the young Jays.

OMBL PLAYOFF SCHEDULE

FRIDAY JULY 27 VERNON VS KELOWNA 7:30pm
SATURDAY JULY 28 KAMLOOPS VS VERNON 5pm
KAMLOOPS VS KELOWNA 7:30pm
SUNDAY JULY 29 FINAL (TOP 2) 1:00pm

The Jays will then (hopefully) attend the BC Senior Championships starting Friday August 3rd – Monday August 6th,
in Prince George. The Jays 21 and under players will then attend the Canadian Junior Championships in Trois Riviers, Quebec, August 16 –21.

Jon Bones Jones nominated for Best Fighter ESPY

Los Angeles, Calif. - UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones has been nominated for a 2012 ESPY Award in the category of Best Fighter.

Other nominees in this category are UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, WBC Welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and current WBA and WBC Middleweight champion Andre Ward. Mayweather won the Best Fighter award in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

The 20th ESPYS are live on Wednesday, July 11th at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles with host Rob Riggle. The event is the one night where the sports world joins together to celebrate the best moments of the year. Fans will have the chance to select the winners by voting online or by mobile device at ESPN.com/ESPYS. Additionally, fans can follow the official ESPYS Twitter page: @ESPYS.

“It’s an honor to not only be nominated for the ESPY for Best Fighter, but to also be included in a category with some of the greatest fighters in MMA and boxing history.” Jones said.

“Jon had possibly the greatest year of any MMA competitor in history in 2011, and he has carried that over to 2012 so far. This is a well-earned nomination, and it is our hope that the MMA community can help Jon to win his first ESPY Award by voting frequently,” stated Malki Kawa, President of First Round Management and Jones’ agent.

Jones, who holds a 16-1 professional record, won all four of his fights in 2011. On Feb. 5 at UFC 126, the 24 year-old Endicott, N.Y. native defeated Ryan Bader by submission. Just six weeks later at UFC 128, Jones earned the Light Heavyweight belt by dominating Mauricio “Shogun” Rua with a third-round TKO/KO.  At UFC 135 on Sept. 24, Jones capped off his first title defense with a submission victory over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.  It was the first time Jackson had ever been submitted in his legendary UFC career. On Dec. 10 at UFC 140, Jones downed Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida by technical submission.

With those victories, Jones became the first fighter in UFC history to defeat three former champions in one calendar year.

Starting off 2012, Jones defeated another former champion, “Suga” Rashad Evans, by unanimous decision at UFC 145 on April 21. He is next scheduled to fight Dan Henderson at UFC 151 on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas.

The ESPYS and related events benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research in memory of the late Jim Valvano.

WCA Jays Finally Play Again

The WCA Jays were starved for action after having their last 5 games cancelled due to rain and they took it out on the Vernon Diamondbacks on Wednesday night up in Vernon winning 14 – 2.  On the night Dallas Monk was 3 for 3 with 2 rbi, Markandre Melanson 2/2 and 1 rbi, Brad White 2/2 and Jared Johnson with 2hits and 2 rbi’s.  The Jays used several pitchers in an effort to get them ready for the upcoming weekend PIL action.  Todd Leavitt tossed 2 innings of no hit ball after starter Mike Tongue gave up a couple of runs in the first inning.

The WCA Jays have an exciting weekend planned as they host a pair of Pacific International League double headers at Boucherie Field in West Kelowna.  First up will be the North West Honkers (Bellevue Washington) starting at 2pm Saturday.  On Sunday the Coquitlam “A”’s will enter the Jays nest with the Double Dip starting at 11am.  These are 2 quality teams and certainly challenge the young Jays players.  Hey kids – a great place to take you Dad on fathers day Weekend.

WCA Kelowna Jays Wait Till Final Game To Put It Together

The 4 Pacific International league teams that did battle at Elks Stadium this weekend we each in different stages of forming their summer teams and finding out what each player could do, and the results showed that.

The Kamloops Sun Devils fielded a veteran team, mostly over 21, and they were solid winning 3 of 4 games.  The Langley Blaze also had all their veteran players here and only missing a few key rookies and they also went 3 – 1.

Trail is basically a senior team but they have brought in several younger players this year including 2 who played for Okanagan College this season, and the team was 1 – 3.  The WCA Jays are basically the youngest team in the league, with only 4 over 21 years old players.

They are slowly getting to know each other and the difficult, more experienced competition they must face, but they have shown signs of being ready to break out.  Their coaching staff are still finding out what each kid is capable of and that sometimes means leaving a starting pitcher in a game a bit longer than they should, or gambling a bit on the base paths to see which kids are quicker and which ones are smart base stealers.

The Jays were 1 – 3 but made their last game count the most knocking off the 3 – 0 Kamloops Sun Devils 16 – 8.

In their first game the Jays were shut out by Kamloops 7 – 0 not being able to solve Japanese pitcher Wataru Asaoka, an exchange student at TRU, who tossed a neat 1 hitter.  The Jays were the victim of one bad inning giving up 4 runs in the 4th as starting pitcher Marcus Drewry, an OC pitcher, ran out of gas and wasn’t relieved in time.

He gave up 6 hits and 4 runs after a solid first 3 innings yielding only one hit and striking out 6.  Asaoka had a no-hitter going until Tyler Enns singled with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th.

In the Jays 2 nd game they gave up 4 runs in the 3r inning and 3 in the 4th and just couldn’t get back in it.  Starter Colton Lindsay was sharp in the first but tried to rely mainly on his fastball, rather than mixing his pitches and changing speeds, and the experienced Blaze hitters took full advantage pounding out 9 hits.

For Langley Brad Ferraro was 4 for 4, Jesse Peters was 2 for 4 with 3 rbi’s, and Dillon Reynolds was 2 for 3 with 4 rbi’s.  For the Jays Jordan Varga was 2 for 2, scored 2 runs and had one rbi, Jared Johnson, Dom D’souza, and Jordan Devencenzi each had rbi’s.

In game 3, against a team they should beat, the Jays lost 3 – 2 to the Trail Orioles.  Jays Dawson Newman hooked up with Trails’ Kyle Parsons in a pitchers duel which saw trail score the winning run in the 5th inning.  Jays outhit Trail 9 – 5 but couldn’t get the big hit when needed, leaving the bases loaded twice and hitting into 2 double plays.

For the Jays Dallas Monk was 3 for 3 and both Tyler Enns and Jay Huggins had rbi’s.

WCA Jays left the best to the last pounding 5 Kamloops pitchers for 16 runs.  They had 2 huge innings scoring 7 runs in both the 2nd and 6th innings, helped out by 8 walks and 8 hits.  Thomas Bidszinski led the way going 3 for 3, plus 2 walks, and 3 rbi’s.

Dallas Monk scored 3 runs, and Jordan Devencenzi had 2 rbi’s.  Starter Brad White, in his first start of the summer, pitched a good game into the 5th when he ran out of gas and gave way to newcomer Josh Makler.  Kamloops scored 4 runs in the inning.  Josh pitched well through the 8th and gave way to Mike Tongue who finished the game.

The Kelowna – Kamloops rivalry is alive and well whether it is hockey or baseball and of course whether its TRU/OC or Jays/Sun Devils.

Scores in other games were:  Langley 8  Trail 2     Langley 4   Trail 0    Kamloops 7  Langley 0  Kamloops  10  Trail 5

One other highlight is there was a bench clearing altercation in the Kamloops vs. Trail game created by some hit by pitch batters (4) and a lot of chirping which led to the brawl. This was the first bench clearing brawl at Elks Stadium since 1995 when the Kelowna Grizzlies and Tacoma Timbers rumbled for over 15 minutes.

The West Coast Authentic Jays renew their rivalry with Kamloops on Wednesday night at Elks Stadium – 7:30 pm.

The WCA Jays head south for the weekend with double headers against the Seattle Studs and Burnaby Bulldogs.

WCA Jays Bats Come Alive In Win Over D’Backs

The West Coast Authentic Jays amassed 15 hits in an 11- 0 win over the Vernon Diamondbacks in Okanagan Major Baseball League play on Wednesday night.

Shortstop and assistant coach Jared Johnson led the way going 4 for 5 with 2 rbi’s, and by Austin Bartleson who was 3 for 5 and scored 3 runs.  3rd Baseman Jordan Varga was 2 for 4 with a walk, 2 runs scored and 2 rbi’s.

Right fielder Dom D’souza was 2 for 2, 2 walks, and an rbi, and Dallas Monk also has 2 rbi’s.

The Jays used 1 pitcher per inning over 7 innings giving up no runs, 3 hits, and striking out 10.

The Jays now host the Langley Blaze, Trail Orioles and Kamloops Sun Devils in a weekend ice-breaker tournament with the first game starting at 11 am Saturday featuring the rival Sun Devils vs. the WCA Jays.  All games at Elks Stadium
